Clarity of Purpose ( Installment 3 of 4)

In the last installment we talked about your clarity of desire.  It is an important building block for this reading so if you missed it feel free to click here and have a read.  We’ll wait. 😉

When we are clear on how we want to feel and what kinds of things make us feel that way we can get clearer on the big existential questions…Why am I here? What am I supposed to do?

Who do I want to be?  How can I make a difference?

There are so many ways to make a difference, and while my clients are business owners or aspiring entrepreneurs who choose to make their impact via their business, we can all make our mark on the world.

If you are employed vs running a business you are making powerful impacts on the world through that work.  I hope you are doing something you love.  At the end of the day the real key is that we are doing something that feels meaningful to us and that feels more like a joy than a burden.

I am blessed to often not be able to tell the difference between my work and my play.  I enjoy an easy balance between the two and I love what I do so much that it feels like play.  I find that I tend to work more than the average person as I truly enjoy what I do and it lights me up from the inside out.  It feeds my 6 human needs (as we talked about in the last installment).  I enjoy deep meaningful connections and relationships with my clients, mentors and peers, I make a difference for those I serve, and I have a business that is a vehicle for freedom of time and income.  This has allowed me to provide for my daughters both financially and in time.

“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.”
–Lawrence Pearsall Jacks

For me, finding my purpose came in exploring my edges and first being miserable.  Sounds a bit dramatic, but the truth is I had to be unhappy to figure out what made me happy.  Instead of living life….life was living me.  I was overcommitted, and under-fulfilled. In short….more was not more.  I needed less.  But it wasn’t just ‘less’ that I needed.  I needed fewer things in my sphere, but I needed those things to have a higher concentration of quality connection and experience.  I needed to get more from what I was doing.  I had made the mistake of doing more things to get more fulfillment instead of being mindful of the quality of what I was doing and if it was aligned or not.  Quality over quantity.  When I distilled down how I wanted to feel and what things made me feel those ways, I started to see that there were a smaller number of things that achieved a larger number of feelings.  There were really only a handful of things that lead to deep meaningful experiences.

When we distill our life experience to the things that really matter we can see what things we want to spend most of our time doing.  We see what things allow us to stay in our zones of genius and stay in our lane.  When we stay in our lane without swerving all over the place we can get where we want to go faster and easier with less obstacles.

Vishen Lakian talks about 3 questions. They have to do with these three categories:

Experiences.  Growth.  Contribution

When we look at these 3 categories we start to see where we really want to make our impact on the world.  We should do more of that….LOTS MORE OF THAT!

What experiences do you want?

How will you grow?

Where will you contribute?

The overlaps of these things allow your purpose to emerge.

What are these things for you?

In the next installment we will talk about Clarity of Action.  Once we know how we want to feel and engineer goals from that place that align with our purpose…we must be in action to get results!
